The Beauty of May Markets in Provence

The Beauty of May Markets in Provence

In May, the every day markets of Aix-en-Provence swell with beauty. Vendors station under the dappled light of the plane trees in Place Richelme and spread far and wide at the Place des Prêcheurs and Palais de Justice.

May produce is a parade of colors. The first of the year's heirloom tomatoes are showing off; white and green asparagus (a celebrated springtime delicacy in Provence) stand proudly; fresh basil, bunches of salad, piles of carrots, violet artichokes, fresh garlic fan out; maybe the best of all are the reds: sweet sweet strawberries and cherries.

Markets in Provence are so much more than a place to shop for produce. They are a way of life for each town. In Aix, friends meet up for a browse and coffee on a sunny terrace - to people watch.

Aix's markets are not just fruit and vegetable affairs. At the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville is the storied flower market...stalls overflow with lush peonies (May!), roses, freesia, sunflowers and fresh herbs.

A trip to the market makes no sense without a basket...any shape or size, and there are plenty to choose from - with sturdy leather handles, or even flat totes. Often handmade in traditional Provençal style, a basket or market tote simply completes the experience.

Get to the market early for best produce selection and a quieter moment. Bring cash (some vendors are still very traditional), your basket and lots of time...markets are for relishing.
