Beautiful Gardens of Provence
Provence, as a region, is the steward of many beautiful gardens. Many wine domains and former grand châteaux and estates invite visitors today to absorb their lovely grounds, often offering wine tastings or a seat at a table for a delicious meal with an ambrosial view. As part of a series, we want to take you to various gardens, provide recommendations and give a taste of the beauty of the region. Today, we will visit a couple of gardens in and near a little village in the Luberon, Lauris:
Domaine de Fontenille
The Domaine de Fontenille is a beautiful domain, set in the middle of a 35-hectare property, awash with verdant vineyards and gardens. It is found in the Luberon region of Provence and just outside the charming village of Lauris. The 18th century bastide has been entirely renovated and is now a boutique hotel. One can sit and admire the grounds while enjoying a meal inspired by local cuisine and traditions, as well as produce directly from the garden “Le Grand Potager.” These fruits and vegetables are grown on the grounds for the restaurants of the domain and are laid out in an exquisite fashion. The garden must be walked and taken in! Tucked away and very intimate, roaming these gardens is a gem of an experience.
Château de Lauris
The gardens of the Château de Lauris provide a sweeping vista on the Luberon, La Durance river, mountains (les Alpilles and the Sainte Victoire). In April, white irises adorn these beds and in May, the garden is replete with white roses. The style of the gardens is classically French - Le Notre, French garden architect extraordinaire under Louis XIV, would be proud. The village is a recommended destination in the Luberon and the French gardens make it extra special. The village, chateau and gardens are an easy stop, especially if making your way to or from the Domaine de Fontenille.
A lovely pastel, milky summer sky and moon rise… Here, a table on the grounds of the château, dressed with one of our Couleur Nature table prints. How romantic!
