Luberon Villages in Spring

Luberon Villages in Spring

In early spring, the Luberon valley in Provence starts to shift. April brings longer days, green starts to spread like the warmth in the air. It is magic. Life also starts to come alive again in the small, medieval villages of the beautiful Luberon.

Lourmarin is the gateway to the Luberon from the southern side. It has been settled since the Neolithic period and the layers of time are evident as one wanders along the winding streets.

In April, irises are in full bloom, along with cherry and pear trees. Local markets are filled with asparagus, artichokes, strawberries and sweet peas.

Higher up in the valley sits perhaps the most charming village of all: Oppède-le-Vieux. The village is built straight into the face of the mountain and is a rambling assortment of stone homes - all leading up to the beautiful Notre-Dame-d'Alydon.

Remains of the château sit above the chapel. Wild valerian and euphorbia push up between stones along the village path. As one climbs higher and higher, the views open to the Luberon valley. Pure bliss.

April is a month of transition in Provence. Vineyards are still quite bare, but their fluorescent leaves are fleshing out rapidly. Olive groves are silvery and quiet. Days are longer, but the air can turn quickly chilly once the sun sets. The villages, like the budding spring world, are awakening, but aren't teeming with people. April is a very special time to witness this valley coming to life.
