Provence Village: Saint-Saturnin-les-Apt

Provence Village: Saint-Saturnin-les-Apt

Located in the picturesque village of Saint-Saturnin-Les-Apt, nestled in the heart of the Luberon region in the south of France, stands the magnificent ruins of the Château of Saint-Saturnin-Les-Apt. One can start in the village itself...and meander through the winding streets upward - inevitably toward the ancient ruins of the château. This historical gem is a testament to the rich heritage and architectural marvels of the region.

The Château of Saint-Saturnin-Les-Apt dates back to the 11th century and has witnessed centuries of history unfold within its walls. Originally built as a fortress to protect the village, it was then transformed into a grand residence. The ramparts of the old castle are still well-preserved, the gates, the square towers and individual rooms can still be made out.

One of the highlights of the ruins is the keep, a massive tower that served as the last line of defense during times of conflict. Climbing to the top of the keep rewards visitors with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, making it a perfect spot to enjoy the view of the Luberon valley unfolding endlessly.

In the fall months, the bountiful rows of vines, olive groves and agricultural fields unite into a patchwork quilt of Provence beauty.
