Your table runner or cloth can completely transform the look of your room, but with the flexibility of you being able to take it off, throw it in the laundry, and create a completely new look with a different table setting.
The look you want to create will come down to the size of the table runners and tablecloths you choose.
An elegant tablecloth, that flows over the edge of your table and brushes the floor, is perfect for a formal dinner party, whilst a shorter tablecloth will create a relaxed and casual atmosphere.
To work out the right table runner dimensions for your dining table, measure the width of your table and divide it by three. For example, if you have a square or rectangular table, that is 60 inches wide, your table runner width should be 20 inches. (e.g. 60/3 = 20).
This will give you enough space on either side, so that your place settings don’t overlap with your table runner.
The length of your table runner is up to you. Ideally, it should hang at least six inches over each end of your table, but shouldn’t hang further than your tablecloth. For example, if your table is 60 inches long, your table runner should be at least 72 inches long.
This will allow for 6 inches at either end of the table.

The shape of your table is important when calculating your tablecloth size, but there are some general rules to follow when you’re working it out. A tablecloth that hangs 6 to 10 inches over the edge of your table is ideal for casual dining, whilst a tablecloth that hangs 30 inches over the edge of your table, touching the floor, is perfect for a formal occasion.
It is worth double checking whether your tablecloth dimensions are recorded in imperial or metric. Make sure if you measured your table in inches, you convert the dimensions into whatever units your tablecloth size is measured in.
If you have a round table, it might make sense that you would buy a round tablecloth, but it is completely possible to put a square table cloth on a round table as long as you get the measurements right.
Table runners for round tables
There are two ways to lay a runner on a round table. First is a single runner, straight across the diameter of the table, leaving two sides of the table free for place settings. The second way, is to have two table runners set out in an X pattern through the center of the table, with one person sitting at either point on the X, and other diners filling in the spaces in between.
To get measure your table and ensure you get the right tablecloth size, measure through the centre point of your table to get the diameter.

The best option for a rectangular table, is an equally proportioned rectangular tablecloth. It may be impossible to get the exact proportions, but that won’t be noticable. Your table runner simply has to be 12 inches longer than length of your table, to allow for enough drop at the ends.
To find out the right units for your table, measure the width of the table and the length of the table. You will end up with a measurement like 60x40inches. Height can be included in your measurements if the table is at an unusual height.
