Dreamy Provence village: Saignon

Somehow, the striking village of Saignon has not yet made everyone's list for Provence...a quiet little gem in the Luberon. Saignon is built up onto an escarpment and the entire village feels like it has been woven into the rock itself. The villages in this part of Provence have elements that are carried over from one to another, but Saignon offers something unique - a kind of fascination as one wanders through the tiny alleys and up on to the high lookout point, which brings the valley of Apt into focus. Glorious land.

From the Gallo-Roman period through the middle ages and beyond, Saignon is imprinted into the stone of its buildings, ramparts and ruins.

A most fascinating climb up the ramparts and remnants of the ancient chateau brings one to the Rocher de Bellevue - whose name aptly describes what one finds at the top. An easy climb for anyone (staircase makes it quite accessible).

July is a particularly abundant time to visit...lavender fields stretch out on all sides - like squares of a painting.

Take time to have an ice cream or an evening drink in the main village square. The fountain will serenade you...perhaps with a lullaby that will lure you to stay longer than you anticipated.
