Provence Insider Recommendation: Un Jardin sur le Toit

Provence Insider Recommendation: Un Jardin sur le Toit

Perched on a massive cliff in Provence in the charming village of Saignon, one finds the aptly-named restaurant Un Jardin sur le Toit (A garden on the roof).

The restaurant sits on the ruins of a 12th century castle - the Château de Crugière. The exposed stones and former archways and spaces of the castle set the scene to be transported entirely. Un Jardin sur le Toit is positioned at the height of the village and the 360 degree views found here are breathtaking. A lunch meal in July will feature the bright beauty of the Luberon summer, the deep purple of the lavender fields below. An evening dinner will spotlight the setting sun; the warm summer air intoxicates as the sun sets.

The restaurant's food is considered locally as "bistronomique" (a perfect interweaving of bistro fare and high-end gastronomy). The menu is awash with a selection of local and fresh products at any given moment. The current selection includes L'Hymne à la Mer, "A hymn to the sea" - the classic French mediterranean bouillabaisse dish revisited and set to simmer lightly for 48 hours before it lands in one's plate. A classic dessert is the Vacherin Déstructure aux Agrumes - citrus cream, mascarpone whipped cream and vanilla - topped with fresh fruit, seasonal sorbets (pictured below).

If you find yourself in the beautiful villages of the Luberon, Provence, Saignon is not to be missed - and a meal at Un Jardin sur le Toit is one that will stay with you for some time.
